چکیده

As a result of an unidentified red cell defect, erythrocytes from patients with paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria 1 are susceptible to hemolysis in acidified fresh serum (1). This acid hemolysis reaction is augmented by commercial bovine thrombin (2). The role of serum complement in these PNH hemolytic reactions has not been entirely clear (3). Previous studies from this laboratory, utilizing AH *PNHE and Thr PNHE, have demonstrated the presence of complement on the surface of these cells (4). The present studies provide a more detailed analysis of the components of complement found on AHL PNHE and Thr*PNHE and compare these findings with the components of complement found on residual, unlysed normal erythrocytes surviving

Serum-red cell interactions at low ionic strength: erythrocyte complement coating and hemolysis of paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria cells.

Complement coating and hemolysis were observed when erythrocytes from patients with paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH) were incubated in isotonic sucrose solution in the presence of small amounts of serum. Normal cells were likewise coated with complement components but did not hemolyze. Both normal and PNH erythrocytes reduced the hemolytic complement activity of the serum used in this ...

The properdin system and immunity. IV. The hemolysis of erythrocytes from patients with paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria.

Paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH) is a rare chronic hemolytic anemia characterized by an acquired defect of the erythrocyte which renders it susceptible to hemolysis by normal human serum. Previous reports have indicated that magnesium and factors resembling the components of complement are required for the hemolysis in vitro of PNH erythrocytes by normal serum (1, 2). Recently a natura...
